The SS-Fronthilfe Deutsche Reichspost was formed in the fall of 1941 as Fernkraftpost Wilna-Smolensk on the order of Reichspostminister Karl-Wilhelm and was a security organization for the postal services made available to the Wehrmacht. In May 1942 it was renamed Fronthilfe Deutsche Reichspost Kraftfahrstaffel Ost.
In the fall of 1942 it was transferred to the Waffen-SS and redesignated Fronthilfe Deutsche Reichspost SS-Kraftfahrstaffel, it was redesignated for the last time in 1943 when it recieved the title SS-Fronthilfe Deutsche Reichspost (in some sources it is listed as 1. Regiment SS-Postschutz).
