The Heeresgruppe Süd was formed from 12. Armee in September 1939 and was redesignated Heeresgruppe A on 15 October 1939 and was reformed in June 1941.

It was split into Heeresgruppe A & Heeresgruppe B on 13 July 1942 and was reformed from Heeresgruppe Don in February 1943.

It was redesignated Heeresgruppe Nordukraine on 4 April 1944 and was reformed from Heeresgruppe Südukraine in September 1944.

In April 1945 it was redesignated Heeresgruppe Ostmark.
