Formed in the summer of 1941 in Lager Brookzetel near Aurich for Unternehmen 'Felix'. In December 1941 the Abteilung was assigned to the Crima and in February 1942 was shifted there under the Seekommandant Ukraine/Seekommandant Krim. The Abteilung was made up of 17 Batterien that were enlarged and divided into 3 Artilleriegruppen based at Sevastopol, Feodosiya and Kerch. In May 1943 two of the Artilleriegruppen were used to form further Marineartillerieabteilungen, the Gruppe in Kerch formed the Marineartillerieabteilung 613 and the Gruppe in Feodosiya formed the Marineartillerieabteilung 602. All that remained of the Abteilung was the Gruppe at Sevastopol. The Marineartillerieabteilung 613 and Marineartillerieabteilung 602 became subordinate to Seekommandant Kaukasus until October 1943 when they were returned to the control of Seekommandant Krim. The Kommandeur of the Abteilung was also used as the Artillerieoffizier beim Stabe of Seekommandant Krim and was Artilleriekommandeur Sewastopol. After the Crimea was evacuated in May 1944, what remained of the Marineartillerieabteilung 601 (as well as the other two) were integrated into Marineartillerieabteilung 613.
