The Lebensborn e.V. was founded in 1935 to care for pregnant SS wives and young women referred by party agencies. It was a part of Rasse und Siedlungshauptamt until 1938 when it was transferred to the Persönlicher Stab RFSS.

There were also a more sinister activities carried out by the Lebensborn, this included kidnapping of germanic children from the occupied territories and placing them with german families. This children came mainly from the orphanages but some were also taken from members of the resistance.

The Lebensborn homes were not brothels or "breeding homes" which seems to be a popular myth.
