The Garde Wallone was formed in July 1941 as an auxiliary police force in Wallonia, Belgium, with many of the volunteers coming from the Formation de Combat. The name come from the famous Walloon mercenaries serving the Spanish crown in the 17th and 18th centuries. The successful formation of such a unit was a requirement from the German military authorities in Belgium to allow the formation of a Wallon unit to serve on the Eastern front.
In October 1944 the remaining men were forced to join the 28. SS-Freiwilligen-Grenadier-Division Wallonien though some officers refused as they would not be transferred into the Waffen-SS at the same rank as they had in the GW.
