Formed in July 1940 and employed in the West, primarily in the Channel and escort service between the Elbe and Holland. At the start of 1945 the Flotilla was moved to the Baltic where it was employed in escort duties.

After the war it was re-designated 20. Minensuchflottille and employed in the western Baltic for mine clearing as part of the Deutscher Minenräumdienst (DMRL, the German Mine Sweeping Administration, GMSA; Kriegsmarine vessels under Allied control used for mine sweeping duties 1945-1948).
