Formed in April 1940 and employed off Holland & northern Norway. In February 1942 it was used in the 'Channel Dash' then shifted to Finnenbusen. With the retreat of the Eastern Front the Flotilla was employed in escort & security duties in the area of the Baltic.

After Germany's capitulation the Flotilla was used, along with the 1. Minensuchflottille, with the Deutscher Minenräumdienst (DMRL, the German Mine Sweeping Administration, GMSA; Kriegsmarine vessels under Allied control used for mine sweeping duties 1945-1948) in mine clearing operations until the summer of 1945.
