Formed in September 1943 and subordinate to the Kommandierender Admiral Adria. The staff quarters were Duino near Monfalcone in north eastern Italy until April 1944 when it moved to Villa Opicina close to the Slovenian border. It was formed after Italy exited the war and German Forces took over areas previously in Italian hands. The area of command ranged from the mouth of the Tagliamento River up to, and including the island of Susak in Croatia. The islands of Cres and Lošinj were also commanded, although as the war progressed the area of command depleted with the retreating main battle line. With the dissolution of the Komnmandierender Admiral Adria in December 1944 the Seekommandant Istrien was moved to the command of the Deutschen Marinekommando Italien/Marineoberkommando Süd.
