(Luftwaffe Medical Training Detachment)
by Henry L. deZeng IV

Each of these had an Abteilungstab, 1., 2. u. 3. Ausb.Kp. (training companies), 4. Ers.Kp. (replacement company) and 5. Ausbildungskompanie für Sanitäts-Offizier-Anwärter der Luftwaffe (training company for Luftwaffe medical officer candidates). The total personnel strength of a San.Ausb.Abt. d.Lw. as prescribed by its KStN dated 15 November 1940 was 28 officers and 777 NCOs and men. The Abteilung came under the Kommando der Sanitätsausbildungs- und Ersatzeinheiten d.Lw. (Luftwaffe Medical Training and Replacements Units Command) located at Bad Saalow near Berlin. The Arabic number each had was derived from the Luftgau where they were assigned, i.e., San.Ausb.Abt. d.Lw. 1 was in Luftgau I, San.Ausb.Abt. d.Lw. 4 was in Luftgau IV, etc.
