The Polizeiabteilung z.b.V. Wecke was formed on 23 February 1933 on the order of the Prussian Minister of the Interior, Hermann Göring, as a special police unit which was completely loyal to the new regime (this was less than a month since Adolf Hitler became chancellor).
It was originally stationed in the former barracks of Königin-Augusta-Garde-Grenadier-Regiment Nr. 4 (in Kreuzbvert Quarter) and later moved to the former barracks of Königin-Elizabeth-Garde-Grenadier-Regiment Nr. 3 (in Charlottenburg).
It was used to fight the Communist movement and took part in several raids on Communist stronghold in the Berlin area.

It was redesignated Landespolizeigruppe Wecke z.b.V. on 17 July 1933.
