In the summer of 1943 the former Lehr-Regiment 901 (mot) which was back home from the Southern Sector of the Eastern Front since April 1943 for refitting, was restructured and redesignated Panzergrenadier-Versuchs-Regiment 901. Parallel to the moving of Panzertruppenschule Wünsdorf to Bergen the Rgt. was stationed in Fallingbostel in August 1943. From there it was transported by train to Italy where it arrived at St. Pietro des Carso (Dalmatia) on 19 September 1943. During “Fall Achse” (with the Italian defection) it was used as a Heerestruppe unit for security tasks (roads, railways). It was engaged in heavy fightings in the area Fiume-Duga Resa-Tulza. At the turn of September/October 1943 the Rgt. moved to Slowenia where it was used for anti-partisan combat. Mid November 1943 it moved to Bosnia (Pz.AOK 2). At last located at Banja Luka the unit left the Balcan in January 1944. It was redesignated Panzergrenadier-Lehr-Regiment 901 on 10 January 1944. In France, area Nancy-Verdun-Toul-Luneville, it took part in the preparations and the formation process of the new Panzer-Lehr-Division, as it was to become one of the two Pz.Gren.Rgter of this division. Hereby its status as a Heerestruppe unit ended.
