The Hochgebirgs-Jäger-Bataillon 2 was created on 20 July 1942 out of the II. Ausbildungs-Bataillon für Hochgebirgstruppen (2nd Training Battalion for high alpine troops) in Innsbruck, Austria, WK XVII. The unit was attached to 1. Gebirgs-Division during the advance of this division into the Caucasus in summer/autumn 1942. Members of the Btl. also took part in the ascent of the Elbrus. After the retreat to the Kuban bridgehead the Btl. was redesignated Geb.Jäg.Btl 54 by merging with the divisional Felders.Btl. 54 on 12 February 1943.
