UNIT HISTORY:
10 Jun.1944..... Stu.Gesch.Abt.189 (78. Sturm-Div.) was renamed Stu.Gesch.Bde.189 (78. Sturm-Div.). It later fought in the desperate defensive battles between Orscha and Minsk during the Soviet summer offensive (“Operation Bagration”) that commenced on 22 Jun.1944 and was intended to completely destroy Heeresgruppe Mitte. The unit was almost completely destroyed east of the Beresina River while trying to escape the pursuing Russian hordes.
29 Jul.1944..... The remnants of Stu.Gesch.Bde.189 (78. Sturm-Div.), which escaped across the Beresina River, were detached from being an organic part of 78. Sturm-Division (since 29 Dec.1942) and returned to Heerestruppe status. The unit (now designated Heeres- Sturmgeschütz-Brigade 189) was ordered to Burg (bei Magdeburg) Truppenübungsplatz, Wehrkreis XI, for refitting.
8 Aug.1944..... The remaining personnel of the unit (minus 3.Bttr./H-Stu.Gesch.Bde.189) were diverted to Mielau, instead of Magdeburg, and reconstituted as the newly formed Panzerjäger-Abteilung 70, which was then attached to 4. Kavallerie-Brigade. With this act H-Stu.Gesch.Bde.189 was officially disbanded.
Note..... Aug.1944..... 3.Bttr./H-Stu.Gesch.Bde.189 continued on to Theesen, near Burg, where it became 3.Bttr./Stu.Gesch.Bde.244 of the newly forming Stu.Gesch.Bde.244. This unit was virtually destroyed, itself during the fighting around Bobruisk in July.

At this time it received a batterie of Panzer IIs (later withdrawn) and Grenadier-Begleit-Batterie, which now gave the Brigade a total of five batteries.
