The 8. Fallschirmjäger-Division was originally ordered to form in September 1944 but this was soon cancelled. It was formed in January 1945 and saw action at the Reichswald forest and along the Rhine. It was destroyed in the Ruhr pocket in April 1945.

III./Fallschirmjäger-Regiment 22 was rearmed by the British forces after Victory in Europe Day and put into action to clear the Bad Segeberg forest from marauding armed escaped Soviet foreign workers (Fremdarbeiter) starting 9 May 1945.
This incident has led to the myth that paratroopers were put into action against die-hard Waffen-SS troops post-war.
