The 286. Sicherungs-Division was formed from parts of 213. Infanterie-Division in March 1941. It served mainly behind the front lines but defended against the Soviet summer offensive of 1944 when it suffered very heavy losses.
It was used to form 286. Infanterie-Division in December 1944.
