The 198. Infanterie-Division was formed in December 1939 from reserve troops in the Protektorat Böhmen-Mähren. It was in refitted June 1944 as part of the 26. Welle (wave) from Schatten-Division Böhmen.
In January 1945, the division, in conjunction with the Panzer-Brigade 106 Feldherrnhalle, took part in Operation “Sonnenwende” (Solstice), an unsuccessful attack on Strasbourg launched from the Colmar pocket. After escaping from the Colmar pocket across the Rhine, the remnants of the division surrendered to the Americans at Weilheim in April 1945.
