The 225. Infanterie-Division was formed on 26 August 1939 as part of the 3. Welle (wave). In February 1944, it absorbed elements of the disbanded 9. Feld-Division (L). The division surrendered to the Red Army in Courland in May 1945.

Known war crimes

In May 1940 at the village of Vinkt in Belgium soldiers from the division took civilians as hostages and on May 27-28 a total of 86 hostages were killed. (1)
Major Erwin Kühner and Leutnant Franz Lohmann were sentenced to 20 years of hard labour for this massacre post-war.
