On 15 November 1944, the 5. Panzerarmee headquarters staff disengaged from the Aachen sector to prepare for the Ardennes Offensive. Under the German deception maneuver, the 15. Armee, previously in the Netherlands, took over the Aachen sector under the cover name Armeegruppe von Manteuffel. The newly formed 25. Armee, which took over the front in the Netherlands, adopted the cover name 15. Armee. The 5. Panzerarmee, transferred east of the Roer, adopted the cover name Feldjägerkommando z.b.V.
