The Heeresgruppe C was formed on 26 August 1939 from Heeresgruppenkommando 2 and redesignated Heeresgruppe Nord on 22 June 1941.

Heeresgruppe C was reformed on 26 November 1943 in Italy from the staff of the Oberbefehlshaber Süd. From 26 November 1943-2 May 1945, the commander of Heeresgruppe C served also as the Oberbefehlshaber Südwest.
