The Nederlandse Arbeidsdienst (NAD) was formed on 23 May 1941 as a successor to the Opbouwdienst that was formed in June 1940 to give work to all the POWs that returned from Germany. It was initially not a collaborationist organization but the influence of the main local Nazi party Nationaal-Socialistische Beweging (NSB) increased and in the fall of 1941 the leader Major J.N. Breunese in protest of the move into more open collaboration.
A group of volunteers from the NAD was sent to the Eastern front in 1943 to support the German Reichsarbeitsdienst, it was known as the Oostkorps van de NAD or Groupe Oost.
