The Karstwehr-Bataillon was upgraded from the Karstwehr-Kompanie on 15 November 1942 and was used for anti-partisan duties in Italy.
It was upgraded to 24. Waffen-Gebirgs-(Karstjäger-)Division der SS on 1 August 1944.
