The SS-Sturmbrigade Wallonien (briefly known as SS-Freiwilligen-Brigade Wallonien) was formed from Wallonische Infanterie Bataillon 373 of the Heer June 1943. It was redesignated 5. SS-Freiwilligen-Sturmbrigade Wallonien March 1944.

While the brigade was attached to the Wiking division under Herbert Gille it was evaluted by the division staff and Gille wrote:

The Sturmbrigade is lacking in adequate offensive training and is suitable only for defensive actions. This could be remedied somewhat by using small units for scouting and assault troop operations, which gives some experience in offensive undertakings. (2)
