The 5. Alpini Division Pusteria was mobilized in June 1940 and took part in the invasion of France before being sent to Albania. It remained in Albania and Greece until July 1941 when it was moved to Montenegro. In August it was back in Italy and took part in the invasion of Vichy France in November. It was stationed in Grenoble until the surrender in September 1943.

This unit took part in anti-partisan operations in Croatia.
