The 26. Mountain Infantry Division Assietta was formed in November 1939 and took part in the invasion of France. It was sent to the border of Yugoslavia after being brought up to full strength and was sent to Sicily in July 1941. It was destroyed fighting the Allied landings there.
It was rebuilt in northern Italy and was disbanded after the Italian surrender when it surrendered to the German forces.
