The 58. Infantry Division Legnano was mobilized in June 1940 and was sent to Albania in January 1941. It returned to Italy in June for rebuilding and then took part in the invasion of Vichy France in November 1942.
It returned to Italy in July 1943 and surrendered to the Allies in September.

Together with the 18. Infantry-Division it provided manpower to the first Italian unit on the Allied side after the Italian surrender, the 1° Raggruppamento motorizzato (First Motorized Combat Group) that was formed on 28 September 1943.
