The 20. Infantry Division Friuli was raised in June 1940 and took part in the invasion of France. It was sent to the Yugoslav border before being rebuilt in preparation for the planned invasion of Malta. It was sent to Corsica in the occupation of Vichy France in November 1942.
After the Italian surrender in September 1943 it fought the German forces.
